Where to Stay Near Cruise Ports in Africa

Africa is not a typical cruise region where ships depart every day. Most cruises here are longer itineraries, often part of world cruises or extended journeys that combine Africa with Europe, the Middle East, or Asia.

For cruise travelers, South Africa is the main starting point. Both Cape Town and Durban are established cruise ports, with good hotel options and easy access to the terminals. In other parts of Africa, cruise stops are less frequent and usually part of larger itineraries rather than standalone departures.

Choosing where to stay before your cruise in Africa is mostly about planning ahead. In cities like Cape Town, several hotels are located close to the port, especially around the V&A Waterfront. In Durban, most accommodation is found along the beachfront or in the city center, a short drive from the cruise terminal.

Extend Your Stay in Africa

Because cruise itineraries in Africa are often longer, many travelers choose to arrive a few days early or extend their stay after the cruise. This gives you time to explore beyond the port itself.

In Cape Town, it’s common to spend a few extra days visiting Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, or the Cape Peninsula. On a previous trip, I stayed in Camps Bay, about 20–25 minutes from the port, which works well if you’re planning a longer stay rather than just a pre-cruise night.

Africa also offers unique extensions that you won’t find in most cruise regions. Safaris, coastal drives, and beach destinations like Mauritius or Zanzibar are often added before or after a cruise, especially on longer itineraries.

Choosing Where to Stay Near African Cruise Ports

For most cruise passengers, the key decision is simple: stay close to the port for convenience, or choose a more scenic location if you have extra time.

Hotels near the port are best for short stays and early embarkation days, while areas further away can offer better views, more space, and a more relaxed atmosphere if you’re staying longer.
