Where to Stay?
Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s second largest city. It’s a magnificent and spectacular city, home of the Samba, and world famous for its legendary carnival and fantastic beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema.
Stay right at the beach in Copacabana or Ipanema, in downtown, nearby the cruise ship terminal, or close to the airport. For extended cruise vacations, take a plane and spend a couple days near world famous Iguazu Falls or Pantanal tropical wetland areas.
Nearest pre or post cruise hotels are located nearby in the downtown area, called Centro. Here you will find most of the historic buildings and also the financial district.
Many hotels and resorts can be found to the south of the downtown area along the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. Most cruise passengers choose to stay in these areas. These neighborhoods are safe and are within easy reach of all attractions. Distance to the cruise ship dock is 10 mile (16km) or a 20 minute ride.
In Copacabana many hotels are located right on the beach boulevard Avenida Atlantica. Reasonable priced hotels can be found a few blocks from the seaside. Ipanema is one of the most fancy neighborhoods of the city. Here you will find great shopping and first class restaurants. Right next to Ipanema is Leblon, an another upscale area with many good bars and restaurants.
Cheaper places to stay are located in both Flamengo and Botafogo districts. When arriving or departing from Galeão International Airport, several hotels are located nearby. Some provide a free shuttle to/from the airport.

Cruise Ship Passenger Terminal – Pier Maua
The cruise terminal of Rio de Janeiro is located at the city’s commercial port, Pier Maua, which is within walking distance of the downtown business district. Cruise guests staying at Rio’s beachfront hotels at Copacabana or Ipanema can easily reach the port and passenger pier by taxi (10 miles).
Cruises depart from the port to other destinations in Brazil, to Buenos Aires, Amazon River, the Caribbean Islands and around Cape Horn to Valparaiso Chile. Some cruise lines embark passengers for a wonderful transatlantic voyage from Rio de Janeiro to Europe (Mediterranean), which connects the city with popular European cities such as Barcelona in Spain and Lisbon Portugal.

GIG Galeão International Airport serves both international and domestic flights.
Cruise ships dock along Pier Mauá S/A in downtown Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Rio’s international airport, just over 10 miles away, is a 30 minute ride from the Pier Maua cruise ship terminal. Rio de Janeiro Airport is served by shuttle buses, taxis and public transport. Some hotels provide a (free 24h) shuttle service from/to the airport.
Santos Dumont is the domestic airport and centrally located.

Not to be missed is the incredible view from Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar), accessed by cable car from the Cosme Velho station. Looking down on the bay, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the city and Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado is unforgettable.
Don’t forget to explore some of Rio’s museums and churches. Worth a visit are the 16th-century Mosteiro de Sao Bento, 17th-century Convento do Santo Antonio and Igreja de Nossa Senhora from the 18th-century.
The Musea de Arte Moderna, located in the Flamengo district, displays works by Brazilian artists Bruno Giorgi, Di Cavalcanti and Maria Martins. The Natural Museum in the Palacio de Sao Cristovao houses a large archaeological, zoological and botanical collection.

Choose to right hotel in Rio’s best neighborhoods. Stay in the downtown area and you are only a short cab ride away from the port. The city’s most upscale and highly recommended areas are Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon.
A great number of hotels and resorts, and restaurants are lined at the beach. Some feature a rooftop pool with excellent views of the Sugar Loaf Mountain.
For a cheaper place to stay, look for hotels in the Flamengo or Botafogo districts. When flying into or out of GIG international airport, a place to stay nearby is very convenient.
Beaches
eaches — stroll along the mosaic-tile sidewalk of Copacabana. The most famous beach of Rio de Janeiro Brazil is lined with high-rise hotels, bistros and outdoor cafés. Try biscoito globo, a typical beach snack, or sample a caipirinha, a typical Brazilian drink made of rum, lime and sugar.
South of Copacabana is Ipanema, another famous beach in Rio. Enjoy people watching, rent a bike or rollerblades, or watch a game of beach volleyball. Just off both beaches are some of Rio’s finest hotels, b&b’s, boutique shops, clubs, restaurants and beachside cafes. Further south lies Barra Beach. If you want to get away from the crowds, this is the place to go.
Copacabana Beach
Copacabana Beach is the most touristic and famous area of Rio. It contains the best known beach, first class restaurants and clubs.

Ipanema Beach
One of the best areas to stay while in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. It’s a bustling place but slightly less touristly than Copa. Safe area. Some hotels offer splendid sea views and are located on Ipanema Beach seafront.
Leblon
Leblon is one of the most upscale, family oriented neighborhoods of the city. Here you will find fine dining options, and a wide variety of great bars. Located just beside Ipanema, but less touristic.
