Valparaiso is a pretty coastal and second largest city of Chile. Santiago, the capital of Chile, is about 90 minutes away by car. Valparaiso is nicknamed “Little San Francisco” or is more popularly known as “Valpo”.

Overnight stay nearby or in Viña del Mar, the capital city of Santiago or close to Santiago’s Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport.

A large number hotels are located within walking distance of the terminal, right in Valparaiso’s city center. Another option is staying in a reasonable priced or more luxurious hotel in downtown Santiago. The capital city is a big, bustling, cosmopolitan city, home to many historical sights, museums, fascinating architecture, art galleries and other tourist attractions.

The main gateway for cruise passengers departing from the Port of Valparaiso in Chile is Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago. Some nearby hotels offer a free airport shuttle transfer. Downtown Santiago is about 15 to 20 minutes drive away from the airport.

The seaport of Valparaiso is home to Chile’s navy headquarters and is a primary departure port for cruises around South America’s legendary Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires in Argentina. Some longer cruises can end in San Diego or San Francisco CA, or in Florida’s main ports Miami or Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale).

Ships dock at the Valparaiso Passenger Terminal (P.L.C.) at Muelle Prat. The terminal is located in the restored Simon Bolivar Warehouse in the Baron’s Wharf sector of the Port of Valparaiso.

The Passenger Terminal building is situated one mile from the berths. Cruise Passengers check in at this terminal and then are bussed to the ship. Downtown is 5 minutes away. From Santiago you can easily get to Valparaiso by bus. It takes less than two hours.

Santiago – A Bustling City with Historical Squares

Santiago is a bustling city with historical squares, colonial buildings, metro lines, fantastic restaurants and great shops.

You can start your visit of Santiago de Chile from San Cristobal Hill in Santiago’s Metropolitan Park. Go on foot, by bike, or by funicular. At the top is a gleaming statue of the Virgen de la Immaculada. The view of the city and the Andes from the top of this hill is really beautiful.

Walk down and wander around in the Bellavista bohemian district, the cultural city neighborhood. It is a very lively area full of colorful houses, restaurants and pubs where you can find Chile’s best ethnic and local cuisine. It is also the location of La Chascona, one of the three intriguing homes of Nobel poet Pablo Neruda. Tours are led by a guide, available in English or Spanish.

The historic heart of the city is Plaza de Armes. This square was laid out by Pedro de Valdivia, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city in 1541. The city’s most formal square is Constitution Square, home to Palacio de la Moneda, the presidential palace. A must-see is watching the changing of the guards. Do not miss a visit to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, a must see museum of Chilean history.

Valparaiso – Chile’s Oldest City

Discover Valparaiso‘s fantastic colourful buildings and magnificent old mansions. Founded in 1536, Valparaíso is Chile’s oldest city and has been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Take a ride in one of the old funicular lifts, which climbe the hillside and connect the lower levels of the city with the upper areas. Stroll along the Paseo 21 de Mayo promenade for a nice view of the harbor, see Chile’s first public library and Latin America’s oldest stock exchange.

The main tourist attraction of Valparaiso is La Sebastina. This house, of Chile’s Nobel-prize-winning poet Pablo Nerudais, is an interesting peek into the lifestyle of this poet. Nearby is Cerro Concepcion or Concepcion Hill, home to a number of fine restaurants, nice bars, old houses and first class hotels. It’s one of the best areas to find an excellent pre or post cruise accommodation.

Between Valparaiso and the capital of Santiago is the Valle de Casablanca, an important and one of the best wine regions of Chile. It’s a great valley with some really nice vineyards, and is famous for its white wines, including Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
