Cruise vessels tie up at four terminals, HafenCity, Altona, Überseebrücke and Steinwerder. All terminals are located within close proximity of the city centre. Hotels and b&b’s are an inexpensive taxi ride away from both embarkation or disembarkation terminals.

Hamburg Cruise Center Altona — Cruise facility, mainly used by larges cruise ships, is located in the old fish dock area, less than a mile downriver from the Landungsbrucken.

From Central Train Station to Altona: Take S1/S3/U3 to Landungsbrücken, from there take the HVV-ferry (line 62) direction to Finkenwerder and exit at Dockland, Hamburg Cruise Center Altona is located next to the ferry pier.

Cruise Centre 3 Steinwerder — located right in the heart of the port. The terminal can handle the largest vessels afloat.

Überseequartier — when it’s busy in port, largee sailing ships and small passenger vessels can tie up here close to the city centre.

City located on the Alster and Elbe Rivers

The Old City or Altstadt offers unique architecture. Don’t miss Michaels Church with its impressive 132m high tower and built in the 18th century. It’s the most significant Baroque church in Northern Germany. Nearby is the Rathaus, the Neo-Renaissance City Hall of Hamburg. Art lovers must visit the Hamburger Kunsthalle, a major art museum displaying works of world famous painters.

A popular spot for families with kids is the Tierpark Hagenbeck Zoo. Another fun thing to do for children is the Miniatur Wunderland, home of the largest model railway layout in the world.

Popular by tourists are the scenic 1 hour harbour and Alster Lake cruises. These boat trips take you on the Elbe river, Binnenalster and Aussenalster, and connecting canals, offering views of shipyards and the main touristic sights of Hamburg.

Located in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg is the International Maritime Museum, housed in a beautiful brick warehouse building. Admire collections of Peter Tamm’s tiny and full ship models, maritime art, construction plans, dioramas of harbors, oil paintings of naval ships, and many more. There is even a large 25-foot Lego model of the Cunard Cruise Liner “Queen Mary 2”.

Plenty of reasonable priced hotels, cheaper hostels and cosy b&b’s can be found in the city centre (downtown), close to Hamburg’s central railway station, and nearby both cruise passenger terminals (HafenCity, Steinwerder and Altona).

Nearest airport

Hamburg Airport — the passenger terminals are located about 10 miles or 16 km from the airport.

The airport is well served by taxis (25 to 30 minutes) and by the Jasper-Bus dept every 10 minutes, which takes you straight to Hamburg railway station.

The S-bahn station is located below the airport terminal.

From the Airport to Altona Cruise Center: cruise passengers can take the subway line S1 to “Landungsbrücken”, from there you have to take the HVV-ferry line 62 to Finkenwerder and exit Dockland. Hamburg Cruise Center Altona is located next to the ferry pier.

From the Airport to HafenCity: cruise passengers can take the subway line S1 to “Jungfernstieg”, from there take the U4 and get off at “Überseequartier”. Hamburg Cruise Center HafenCity is not far away.

Many reasonably priced properties offer a free shuttle transport service to/from HAM airport. The city centre can be reached in a little over 20 minutes.
